Choke

I have a older horse that will choke especially if she is given Alfalfa. It is very scary the first (and every time) time it happens to one of your horses .

What is Choke?

It's when  partiality chewed food gets caught in your horses esophagus.  The horse will cough trying to get the food dislodged, you also will see a lot of saliva and food come up the nostrils  because the horse cannot swallow. This isn't a emergency situation as it would be for us because horses don't breath through their mouths like we do.

Treatment

What I've done and what has so far worked is taking a water hose and putting it to the horses lips to help rinse the mass down. I might do this for ten to fifteen min.  Then observe the mare to see if  the mass has dialoged.  If not I will repeat trying to rinse it down with a water hose.  When the food is dislodged you may want to give your horse 3cc of Banamine as their throat will be sore. Also do not be surprised if it takes a few days for your horse's appetite to return, this is normal and I usually give a warm mash to sooth the throat.  If this does not work call a vet. it may be necessary to tube your horse.   We have been lucky so far and  that hasn't been necessary for Bacon
